Makan’s artistic explorations stem from an obsession with those elemental experiences in life that are characterized by a quality that transcends the norm, that affords one a sense of an immediate and undeniable awe, and also fuels and enriches subsequent reflections and considerations. An artist’s sensitivity to moments, moods, and rhythms is the kernel of all aesthetic endeavors. The primitive art in the cave depicting the hunt, the representational perfection of 15th and 16th century painting, and the abstractions of the early 20th century are all evidence that although our artistic vernacular has broadened in scope, human beings have maintained a continuity throughout aesthetic endeavors: a desire to articulate, understand and grapple with sensation.
Makan’s central focus is to engage with and understand this primal excitement. The works are broad in technique, in composition, and in the application of mediums so as to adequately satisfy the scope of the pursuit, and to make use of the rich array of artistic languages afforded to a contemporary person to better resolve on the essence of aesthetic experience.
